You need to take action and try to prevent the heartburn as much as possible.
You need to avoid placing pressure on your stomach this means no tight clothing. If you eat and feel a little bloated, you will want to unfasten your pants and let some pressure go. If you lay off the alcohol, you will be helping not only your liver, but your esophagus too. Smoking also ups your chance of heartburn. You really should have any heavy meals or eat before you sleep.
If you do, not only will gain a lot of weight, but you will wake up with heartburn. Even though you may feel the need to work out after you eat, don't. You are just risking a chance of having heartburn and that's not fun. This next one is going to be hard; you should avoid some of the foods that, as an American, you have come to love; citrus juices, coffee, milk, chocolate, and cheese.
As for medication, you should stop taking aspirin, but use another form of pain medication. When you sleep you, need to lay your head higher than your stomach or on your left side. This will prevent your acid levels from rising to the esophagus.
If you can follow any of these rules, you will find that your risk levels will go way down and you will experience heartburn less often than normally.
