To make heartburn cure complete there needs to be a long-term view of how food affects the body. To make this easier to understand think of plant foods and herbs in three categories: Acidic, Alkaline and Acidic/Alkaline. This last group can be either/or, depending on the way a person’s body reacts.

In general protein falls into the acidic group, vegetables are alkaline and fruits are in the last group but usually turn alkaline when digested. A health diet should include a variety of foods, but with a major portion comming from plant foods.

Having an acid/alkaline balance is very important because the body is designed to function at a certain acid/alkaline balance, or pH level. To meet this "safe" level most nutrients and toxins must form neutral compounds with other elements before they can be transported by the bloodstream. Living on a high acid diet has a big impact on the body's health as it strives to maintain this balance.

The average input of animal protein far exceeds what is healthy. A smart way to reduce heartburn is to give the body the alkaline foods it needs. These are found in the "rainbow" group of vegetables and fruits. the name refers to their color: violet, red, orange, yellow and dark green.

It is recommended that at least 60 percent of food intake come from the rainbow group, carbohydrates and dairy products. This percentage should be higher if you are trying to rebuild depleted mineral reserves - as high as 80 percent for several months. This allows the tissue to restock calcium, etc so that the body has adequate reserves.

Dietary strategy plays a big role in overcoming acid reflux, because not only do acids damage the lining of the stomach and esophagus but have an effect throughout the body. Use your daily diet to regulate reflux causing acid.
